Coupons Matter

Everyone is on a budget and coupons are a wonderful way to stretch a budget.  The individual who created these recommendations recently paid $21.72 for over $120 worth of groceries and healthcare items.  If you do not have access to a computer in your home to take advantage of coupons, you might consider the local library and computer resources available there, or buddy up with a friend who has a computer or smartphone.

We hope you find the coupon resources helpful in stretching your dollars. If you are not a coupon user and you receive the Sunday paper or local paper, help out your neighbors.  Bring in your coupons and share them with the Pantry.  From time to time, we have to shop for items at local retailers when they are out of stock for those items at the Food Banks.  Additionally, we can share and have shared coupons with our clients.  Some individuals also support us through BOGO's (buy one, get one free).  If you see a BOGO healthcare item or food item at your store, you can donate the free item if you won't be using it.  Be a CARE CLIPPER with us, it makes a difference.

These are the types of non-perishable items we can accept and most often need at the Food Pantry.

General On-Line Coupon Suggestions

  • Set up a separate email account just for couponing using any of the free email sites (gmail, yahoo, etc.).  For security purposes, use a password that is different from your standard email account password.
  • Pick a site that helps you find the latest coupon deals to cut down on the legwork for finding sales.  Many successful couponers use http://www.couponmom.com.  Don't pay for a coupon site.  There are plenty of free coupon sites out there.
  • Set up a folder on your computer named "Couponing" or "Savings" in your browser favorites and add bookmarks for those coupon sites you wish to access quickly.
  • Remember, coupons aren't just for groceries or even household goods.  You can find coupons for restaurants, discount codes for plays, concerts, and other events/activities.

Paper Coupon Suggestions

  • Know your coupon distributors and how to find them.  The bulk of coupons are found in the Sunday paper and the ones in the paper tend to have a higher value than those found on line for the same product.  If you don't have access to a Sunday newspaper, ask a friend to share theirs.
  • Paper coupons are typically carried in one of three inserts.  These include:  SmartSource (SS) which appears almost weekly; Redplum (RP); and Proctor & Gamble (PG) which typically appear once a month.
  • You can often find the SmartSource (SS) and Redplum (RP) inserts in ads that are delivered to your mailbox as well as in local community papers.  The coupons delivered via the mail typically are fewer in number than you might find in the Sunday paper and may feature a lower discount than those found in the Sunday paper, but they can still supplement your coupon stash.
  • If you are not a coupon user and you have a Sunday paper, pull the coupon insert pages and turn them in to your local food bank.  They can be very helpful to our clients who may not have access to a newspaper or computer.

Using Electronic Cards or Coupons

  • If you shop at a retailer that offers a rewards card or shopper's card, make sure you have registered for these cards and use them on each of your shopping trips.  In some cases, they can also help you save on other products like gasoline.
  • You can register many of the grocery retailer shopping cards with other free electronic coupon sites.
  • Check your grocery store sites each week for new electronic coupons and load the ones you think you will use that week to your reward/shoppers card.
  • If your store doubles coupons, choose carefully what you load onto your shopper's card because in many stores (Kroger, for example), an electronic coupon does NOT double whereas a paper coupon would.

Know Your Stores

  • Some stores have policies for coupons that apply in all of their stores.  Other grocery retailers let each store determine their own coupon policies.  Flyers or policy guidelines are typically available on the grocer's website or at the customer service desk.
  • Some stores will accept coupons from a competitor for a similar item.
  • Ingle's is a supporter of the South Hall Community Food Pantry and has a wonderful coupon policy.  Check it out here.
  • Some stores will allow you to use more than one coupon.  Currently, Target is a store that will let you use 1 manufacturer's coupon AND 1 Target coupon for the same item.  Publix currently allows you to use 1 manufacturer's coupon and one Advantage Buy coupon (Publix own store coupon).
  • Some stores have their own coupons.  These include Walgreens, Target and Walmart.
  • In Atlanta, Publix and Kroger both double paper coupons $0.50 and below.  That means if you have multiple coupons for the same item, you would want to use a $0.50 coupon over a $0.55 coupon because the first one doubles and the second one does not.
  • Know your store's BOGO policy (buy one, get one free).  Some stores require you to buy two in order to get the discount whereas other stores do not.  Publix currently does not require you to buy two of the item in order to receive the discount.  Also check to see how the store's BOGO policy works with coupons for the BOGO items applied as well.
